Apple has rolled out a test run of a new payment system for college students on October 2nd, 2018 at Duke University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Oklahoma. Like adding a credit card to your apple wallet, you can now do that with your ID card to pay for whatever you need at school.

Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, Jennifer Bailey, congratulates the success and innovation of its company, citing that it brought the world into a new age of convenience and mobility. Now that they have expanded their horizons into helping college students, Bailey talks about the new goals they are looking to accomplish.

“When we launched Apple Pay, we embarked on a goal to replace the physical wallet. By adding transit, loyalty cards, and contactless ticketing we have expanded the capabilities of Wallet beyond payments, and we’re now thrilled to be working with campuses on adding contactless student ID cards to bring customers even more easy, convenient and secure experiences.”

With the convenience of leaving your real wallet behind, students can now use the newly added card in their apple wallet to purchase goods or service such as coffee, lunch, merchandises, laundry, campus events, and even the library. This provides extra security for the prevention of wallet theft now that your school information is secured in password/fingerprint unlock mechanisms. A 2017 survey found that three-quarters of U.S. students prefer iPhones over Android, hinting the colossal market Apple has.

This feature is simple to use. Just simply hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader and wait for the sign to hover off. Just make sure to use its function at places that generally accept your physical ID. With such a feature so easy to use and versatile, Apple is looking to expand its service to Johns Hopkins University, Santa Clara, and Temple Universities by the end of the year. But CNET reports that schools will have to partner up with Apple to get this type of student ID support. They can’t just enable this feature on their own. For students who may have lost her student ID card once or twice, this feature will become your best friend in school.
