1969-1992
Blanchett was born in Ivanhoe, a town near Melbourne, Australia. She was middle child of Australian June Gamble, a property investor and teacher and American Robert DeWitt Blanchett, Jr., a US Navy Petty Officer who later worked as an advertising executive. She would attend school in Melbourne before attending the University of Melbourne. She would also work in a nursing home while in college. After one year she would drop out to travel abroad. While abroad she got a taste for acting, being asked to be in an Egyptian boxing movie while visiting the country. When she returned for he time abroad she attended National Institute of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1992. She would immediately make a splash on the performance scene.
1992-2002
Blanchett broke onto the scene in David Mamet’s Oleanna opposite Geoffery Rush. She would win Best Actress for the role and Best Newcomer by the Sydney Theatre Critics in 1993. She would also appear in a production of Hamlet while starting her TV career in 1994. She would appear in Australian based shows Police Rescue, Bordertown, and Heartland. She would make her film debut in the WWII drama, Paradise Road. During this time Blanchett would also meet and marry her husband, Andrew Upton. An Australian playwright and screenwriter.
Her first leading role would be in Oscar and Lucinda opposite Ralph Fiennes. Though arguably her break-out role was that of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film Elizabeth. She earned a litany of award nominations, garnering the Best Actress nod from The Oscars, The Golden Globes, The Screen Actors Guild Awards, and The BAFTAs. She would appear in The Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999 and earn another BAFTA nomination for it. Blanchett would break into a more mainstream presence in 2001, appearing in the fantasy smash hit adaptation of the book, The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring. She wouldn’t slow down her award pursuit, earning a Golden Globe and SAG Award nomination for her role in Bandits that same year.
2002-2011
She would finish up her appearances in the Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003 appearing in the final installment, Return of the King. She would be nominated for another Golden Globe in 2003 for her role in Veronica Guerin but it would be in 2005 when she would finally strike gold. She would win an Academy Award for her role as Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorcese’s The Aviator. She would even earn a third Oscar nomination the following year for her role in Notes on a Scandal which she performed in opposite Dame Judi Dench. She would also join AL Gore’s Climate Project in 2006.
Blanchett was recognized for growing presence in pop culture, being named to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list in 2007. She would also reprise her break out role of Queen Elizabeth I that year in Queen Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Blanchett would be nominated AGAIN for an Oscar, this time for two different roles in the same year. One for the aforementioned Queen and another for her role in I’m Not There.
She would reappear in blockbuster action movies in 2008, appearing as the villain in the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In 2008 Blanchett and her husband would begin to co-run the Sydney Theatre Company and she would return to theatre for a short while. She would return to film in the 2010 version of Robin Hood. She would continue to go back and forth between theatre and film over the next couple years.
2011-Present
Blanchett would reprise another role of hers in 2012. She would appear as her character from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Galadriel, in the new trilogy of movies depicting The Hobbit. Blanchett would return to the awards race with her critically acclaimed performance in Woody Allen’s 2013 film Blue Jasmin. She would earn over 40 nominations for her performance. She would go on to clean house, winning all the major awards for the performance.
Blanchett made her Broadway debut in Checkov’s Platonov in 2017. This would only add fuel to the fire that was Blanchet’s award pursuit. She received both a Tony and a Drama Desk Award nomination for her performance. She would make one more valiant return to the action scene playing the villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe move Thor: Ragnarok. She will also be anchoring an all-female version of the Ocean’s movies this year called Ocean’s 8.
