The Washington Capitals won their first ever Stanley Cup last night, defeating the Las Vegas Golden Knights 4-3, winning the series 4 game to 1. While everyone expected — and deservedly so — Alexander Ovechkin to be the story of the night, it was TJ Oshie’s emotional tribute to his father that will likely stick in the memories of sports fans around the globe.

Oshie’s father Tim suffers from Alzheimer’s, however, that didn’t stop him from watching his son win the Stanley Cup. And according to TJ, Alzheimer’s or not, this is one moment that his father is never going to forget.

“To have him here is amazing. He doesn’t travel very well, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to get him out all playoffs. It was kind of a perfect storm to get him with my aunt and sister out from Seattle. He doesn’t remember a lot of stuff,” Oshie said through tears. “But you bet your ass he’s going to remember this one.”

“Besides my family, that’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. It’s for my family. For my two little girls. I got my name on something so they’ll know that dad played hockey when they grow up.”
