Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain Found Dead Of Apparent Suicide At 61-Years-Old

Chef and television host Anthony Bourdain was found dead in a French hotel room at the age of 61 on Friday, June 8. According to reports, Bourdain committed suicide. Bourdain was found unresponsive by his close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, in his hotel room Friday morning in France.

Bourdain was an American chef, author, and television personality who was a 1978 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Bourdain was a veteran of numerous professional kitchens, including many years as executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. He was also known for his frequent appearances on CNN.

Bourdain’s death comes just days after New York City-based designer Kate Spade was found dead at age 55 in a bedroom of an apparent suicide.

According to CNN, Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. The network released the following statement about Bourdain’s suicide:

“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain. His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Bourdain first started to gain national recognition for his 2000 book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. Two years later, his first food and world-travel television show — A Cook’s Tour — premiered on Food Network. The series ran for 35 episodes from 2002 through 2003.

In 2005 he began hosting the Travel Channel’s culinary and cultural adventure programs Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (2005–2012) and The Layover (2011–2013). In 2013, he switched to CNN to begin hosting Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.

Bourdain married his high-school girlfriend, Nancy Putkoski, in 1985. The couple remained together for 20 years until their divorce in 2005. In 2007,  Bourdain married Ottavia Busia. The couple had a daughter, Ariane, born in 2007. Bourdain and Busia divorced in 2016. In 2017, Bourdain began dating Italian actress Asia Argento, whom he met when she appeared on an episode of his CNN series Parts Unknown.

Bourdain was truly unique, as The Smithsonian once called him “the original rock star” of the culinary world and “the Elvis of bad boy chefs.”
