Camp Pendleton Main Gate has been closed by police officials to both incoming and outgoing traffic. With the camp, a Marine Corps base camp located in California, announcing the closure on social media shortly before 1 p.m. local time, the base did not release information confirming a police investigation.
What happened?
Camp Pendleton issued the following statement on their official Twitter account:
“Camp Pendleton Main Gate (Vandergroft Blvd.) closed to inbound and outbound traffic due to police activity. More information will be posted as it becomes available.”
“A driver approached the main gate acting erratically. Military security personnel at the gate detained the driver and are checking the vehicle before clearing the area.”
Only the main gate has closed, but local buses were impacted by the closure
According to ABC News 10, a base spokesperson said that they were unable to release further information concerning the closing of the gate during early reports of the story.
According to Patch, the closure was caused after a driver appeared at the main gate and acted “erratically.” According to officials, only the main gate was impacted during the incident, with all other gates kept open; however, the closure impacted a few local buses, such as North County Transit’s Breeze bus routes 395 and 392, which were detoured.
UPDATE: On its official Twitter account, Camp Pendleton issued the following statement confirming that the gate had been reopened, adding that the driver whose actions instigated the closure was currently being questioned by officials:
“The main gate is now OPEN. A driver approached the main gate around 1230 p.m. acting erratically. Military security personnel at the gate detained the driver, closed the gate, and checked the vehicle before clearing the area. The driver is being questioned by Camp Pen PD.”
As this story is developing, more information will be released as made available.
