Garbiñe Muguruza defeated Maria Sharapova in three straight sets at the 2018 French Open to advance to the semi-finals. Muguruza is a Venezuelan professional tennis player and former world No. 1 who is currently ranked No. 3 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association.

Muguruza, born October 8, 1993, turned professional in 2012 and has won six singles titles, including two majors at the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. And not only did Muguruza win at Wimbledon in 2017, but she beat Serena Williams — largely considered the greatest female tennis player ever — in the final.

In addition to her success in singles, Muguruza has been successful in doubles as well. She was won five titles in doubles and finished runner-up at the 2015 WTA Finals and reached the 2014 French Open semifinals. She achieved those results with her compatriot Carla Suárez Navarro.

At just 24-years-old, Muguruza is going to be a mainstay at the top of women’s tennis for years to come.
