Sofia Boutella is an Algerian dancer, model, and actress who is best known for her roles as Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service, the alien warrior named Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond, and Princess Ahmanet, the main antagonist in Universal’s Dark Universe film The Mummy.
In 2017, Boutella starred alongside Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde, and as undercover French agent Delphine Lasalle in the film adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City. In 2018, Boutella will appear in Hotel Artemis alongside Jodie Foster. She also appeared in the HBO drama film Fahrenheit 451 with Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon.
Boutella, the daughter of jazz musician Safy Boutella, was born in the Bab El Oued district of Algiers. In 1992, at the age of 10, she left Algeria with her family and moved to France, where she started rhythmic gymnastics, joining the French national team at age 18.
Boutella’s breakthrough came in 2007 when she was picked for the Jamie King choreography for Nike as a role model of femininity and hip-hop. This career boost led to more work alongside stars like Madonna, in her Confessions Tour, and Rihanna.
