Murray State suspended all Greek Life activities during the 2018 spring semester and announced that the suspension could last into the 2018 fall semester.

According to a statement from Robert Davies, the President of Murray State, and Don Robertson, the Vice President for Student Affairs Don Robertson, the university suspended all Greek Life social activities on Wednesday, May 9, and may extend the suspension into the upcoming fall semester.

The statement from the university says that the decision to suspended fraternity and sorority activity was based on national trends and own review of reports involving Greek activities occurring with the implementation and enforcement of Greek social event policy.” In addition, the letter says the department must assess Murray State’s policies and procedures.

In addition, the letter says that a university committee made up off representatives from the school’s Greek organizations will begin investigating those policies during the summer, continuing until it can make recommendations to the Office of Student Affairs.

Earlier in 2018, Murray State Police investigated the death of a person at an off-campus fraternity house, although the investigation was classified as “non-criminal.”

The full statement from Murray State University can be read below:

This is the latest major fraternity or sorority suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.
