Reports coming out of an active shooter at the City Hall Parkade have been confirmed by city officials, who are saying that the situation is taking place near the route of the”Rock ‘n’ Roll” marathon, also stylized as the “RocknRoll” marathon, in San Diego.
What happened?
According to NBC San Diego, the active shooting situation was confirmed by city officials; the report also claimed that no other information was available during early reports of the shooting.
Early reports claimed that the shooting situation was “over” the marathon’s route; this was later updated to say that the situation was “near” the marathon’s route instead.
UPDATE: According to NBC San Diego, the shooter was later taken into police custody, without being identified to the public. At this time, there is no information on the victims.
According to WGRZ, the suspect in police custody was identified as female; one police officer was reportedly injured and taken to a local hospital, but it is believed that he was injured by accidentally shooting himself in the foot.
According to the BBC, the woman was believed to be firing an air pistol and could be seen at times holding the gun in her mouth.
UPDATE: According to Rappler, marathon organizers released the following statement, confirming that the incident was unrelated to the marathon:
“The situation involving an active shooter who was engaged with law enforcement was not related to today’s race.”
“By 11:45 am, the course was shut down and approximately 4,900 athletes were rerouted into a designated safe zone.”
“While the race was officially stopped, law enforcement gave the clearance at 11:56 am for runners to resume their progress toward the finish line and the post-race finish area, where they were able to meet up with family and friends.”

The marathon, which is currently taking place in San Diego, is an event that boasts to be one of the world’s largest running series, with over 500,000 participants in 30 global cities each year; the official website gave the following explanation over this year’s event:
“For over 20 years, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series has made running fun by infusing each course with live bands, cheer teams and more. In 2018, we have reset our focus to deliver best-in-class running events, where music is core and our community encourages participants to feel like they are something bigger than themselves. We promise to bring more music, better runner support, improved technology, and more community engagement to every event, every step of the way.”
The San Diego event was also given the following description on the official website:
“It all began in San Diego in 1998 and for over 20 years, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series has made running fun by infusing each course with live bands, cheer teams and more. In 2018, we are bringing our best to the Synchrony Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 with more music, runner support, and community engagement every step of the way. This event has always been our Epic Summer Run, and this year we promise to make it better than ever and with a marathon, half, 2-person relay, and 5K there is truly a distance for everyone.”
