Normani Kordei burst onto the scene as a contestant on The X-Factor singing competition. It was on that show that Normani was grouped with Camila Cabello, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, and Dinah Jane to form the powerhouse all-girl group “Fifth Harmony.” The group went on to have plenty of success and chart-topping hits after their stint on reality television, but they recently announced a temporary hiatus while the women pursue their solo ventures.
Normani’s first success as a solo artist came in a big way when she had a breakout moment at the 2018 Billboard Music Award performing “Love Lies” with Khalid. The performance brought down the house and officially let the world know that the 21-year-old has arrived.
“[Khalid] is like my spirit animal,” she said in an interview with Billboard. “We had no idea what we wanted the song to sound like. We had no expectations going in. We knew it was going to be special because of the connection we had as friends, but we didn’t know about the sound. It all happened so organically. It was just one big jam session.”
She also has plans to work with Missy Elliott soon.
“I’ll be working with Missy Elliott soon, and the fact that she’s even willing to take a chance on me as a new artist means a lot, considering that she’s the one I’ve looked up to since I was a little girl,” Normani added. “I literally remember dancing in my grandmother’s living room to all of Missy Elliott’s records. She’s such an innovator, and there’s no one else out there like her. The fact that she is willing to work with me…I’m like, ‘Who? Me?’”
