Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been officially declared husband and wife at Windsor Castle. To celebrate, we’ve collected photos of the royal couple as they enjoy their day of days.
What was the ceremony like?
According to BBC, the royal couple was granted the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex, similar to Prince William and Kate Middleton being granted the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Markle could be seen wearing a dress developed by British designer Clare Waight Keller; she was also seen wearing Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara, loaned to her by the Queen herself. She was also walked down the aisle during the ceremony by Prince Charles, who is now her father-in-law. It is believed that her father, Thomas Markle, was unable to attend the wedding due to health reasons.
Other members of the royal family took part in the ceremony in other ways. Markle has 10 bridesmaids and pageboys, including Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Lady Jane Fellowes, Prince Harry’s maternal aunt and the sister of Diana, Princess of Wales, also gave a reading.
In many ways, the royal wedding broke from tradition
That said, in many ways, the wedding broke tradition. Markle did not wear a wedding ring and did not promise to “obey” her husband during her wedding vows. Prince Harry did wear a platinum band with a textured finish; Markle’s band was made from a piece of Welsh gold.
Many celebrities who appeared at the event included Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John. Many political figures were not invited to the event; as Prince Harry is not in the direct line of succession, there had been less of an obligation than with his older brother’s wedding.
The guests will attend a lunchtime reception at St. George’s Hall, which is given by the queen; in another break from tradition, Markle will give a speech, which will be the first time a royal bride gave a speech.
