Yesterday, Demarcus Cousins responded to a fan on Instagram who asked why he unfollowed the Pelicans on Instagram.
That, plus the fact that the Pelicans showed playoff success, sweeping the Portland Trail Blazers, without Cousins is a tell that he won’t be a priority for their front office this offseason. Cousins, 27, is coming off of a torn Achilles tendon, which may make it harder for him to get a max, or a long-term deal. According to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the market for Cousins might be tepid this offseason, but the four-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA Second Teamer will still draw a lot of interest. But, what teams will he fit with, and will have the money to sign him?
Dallas Mavericks
Dirk Nowitzki was, understandably, not very happy after the Mavs fell to fifth in the draft after the lottery. If the Mavs are able to secure Cousins, they could pair him with their first-round pick from last season, Dennis Smith Jr. and whoever they decide to pick this year. Wendell Carter Jr. or Michael Porter Jr. would possibly both be available and would fit well and give the Mavs a core that has the potential to do some damage.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are going to be in the mix for every big star on the market over the next few seasons. Their first round pick this year is in the hands of the 76ers, and next years is owned by the Celtics. They’re also projected to have the most cap space before next season, with the potential to take on possibly two max contracts. Cousins might not end up commanding a max, but the Lakers could really use a force in the paint like Cousins. He could be a great compliment for last year’s number two overall pick, Lonzo Ball.
Memphis Grizzlies
Memphis ended up with the fourth pick in the lottery, which could be used on a big man like Marvin Bagley or Mohamed Bamba. Adding Cousins to a mix that includes a rookie big man that could make an impact on offense, and a veteran point guard in Mike Conley could bring the Grizzlies back to their former glory when they had Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol wreaking havoc down low. They would have to find a way to make some cap room to sign Cousins, but this would be a big step forward for an organization who has lost a lot over the last few seasons.
