At long last, the NHL Western Conference Finals are finally upon us. This series is between the Winnipeg Jets and the Vegas Golden Knights. Both teams split the first two games of the series in Winnipeg which means that Vegas technically has home-ice for the rest of this series. However, the Jets are used to winning on the road and even won the previous series due to a road victory in game seven against the Nashville Predators. Expect this game to be extremely competitive as both teams want to take a commanding 2-1 lead in this series.

Winnipeg’s postseason success is due to its elite scoring depth which consists of Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine. During the regular season, Wheeler led the team in points with 91 and had an astonishing 68 assists in 81 games. During the playoffs, Wheeler has continued to find open teammates and has 15 assists in just 14 playoff games. Scheifele missed part of the regular season due to injuries but managed to average one point per game. Now that he is healthy, Scheifele has been unstoppable and has scored 12 goals in 14 playoff games. Laine scored 44 goals during the regular season and looks like a future superstar in this league. He is only 20 years old and already has scored 80 career goals in just two seasons of work. In his first playoff appearance, Laine has 11 points in 14 games but is a threat to score anytime he is on the ice.

Vegas’ success has been due to its star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. Since it is Vegas’ first official season in the NHL, the organization partook in an expansion draft during the offseason. In the draft, Vegas decided to take goalie Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team hoped that he would carry it to a potential playoff berth. Since joining Vegas, Fleury has been godly. This season, Fleury went 29-13-4 with a 2.24 goals against average. However, he has been even better in the playoffs. In 12 starts, Fleury is 9-3 with a 1.68 goals against average. Fleury also has had four shutouts already this postseason and he will look to shut down this potent Winnipeg offense again on Wednesday night.

As for my prediction, I have to side with the Knights. Although I think that the Jets are a better all-around team, Vegas has a tremendous home ice advantage and has used it throughout the whole season. Vegas went 29-10-2 at home this season and I expect the T-Mobile Arena to be rocking on Wednesday. I think that the game will be really close but I think that Fleury will be fantastic again as he carries the Knights to a 2-1 series lead.
