Middleton’s paternal family has ties to British aristocracy, with her relatives playing host to British royalty since at least 1926. When she was two years of age, her family live in Jordan for a period of four years while her father worked for British Airways; at this time, Middleton attended an English-language nursery school. Originally educated in private schools, she ultimately attended and graduated from the University of St. Andrews with a Master of Arts degree in art history.

In 2007, the two broke up during a vacation in Switzerland, although they later reconciled. In 2006, Middleton found employment as an accessory buyer with the Jigsaw clothing chain, lasting in the position until 2007. She later worked for the Party Pieces business, working in production and photography, leaving the position in 2011.

In 2010, the engagement between Middleton and Prince William was officially announced during a trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. The couple married the following year on St. Catherine’s Day, with the day later declared a bank holiday in the United Kingdom. As Prince William was created Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus hours before the wedding, Middleton assumed the feminine counterparts to these titles (i.e. Duchess of Cambridge). In 2012, the Duchess announced that she was pregnant with her first child, Prince George. In 2015, she gave birth to her second child, Princess Charlotte. In 2018, her third child, Prince Louis, was born.
