Police in Dexter are searching for an armed and dangerous man who they say stole a fully marked police cruiser. Identifying the suspect as Tyler Tibbetts, who was 22 years old at the time of the incident, police have asked the public to help find him. In addition, at this time, it is believed that the police were able to recover the stolen vehicle, but Tibbetts was still said to be at large.

What do we know so far?

According to Central Maine, police have issued the following description of Tibbetts:

“He is described as being 5’9″ tall, weighing 130 pounds and having brown hair and hazel eyes. He was wearing tan shorts and a salmon colored tee shirt, police said.”

In addition, he was placed in handcuffs when he stole the vehicle, which could have been identified by a number 3 on the front fender; the cruiser was eventually recovered by police with Tibbett still at large.

According to Wiscasset Newspaper, some early reports of the story said the number on the fender was a “2,” not a “3.

People with information about the case were asked to call “945-4643,” the number confirmed by Central Maine.

According to police, Tibbetts is said to be armed and dangerous; that said, specific information about Tibbetts’ initial arrest or the theft of the cruiser were not made available to the public.

Who is Tyler Tibbetts?

According to The Portland Press-Herald, the State Bureau of Identification confirmed that Tibbetts has an adult criminal record; in 2013, when he was a juvenile, he was found responsible for a theft and burglary by a judge in judge in Dover Foxcroft District Court, causing him to serve 18 days; however, he ended up violating his probation, causing him to be sent to jail for one year and a month.

Towards the end of 2013, Tibbetts was later charged by local police with felony aggravated assault; he was ultimately found guilty and served six months of an 18-month sentence.

The following year, he also paid restitution for a misdemeanor theft, requiring him to serve 30 days in jail for resisting arrest.

As this story is developing, more information will be updated as made available.
