A man recently caused a bomb scare at the Daytona Beach International Airport, causing the subsequent evacuation of the building after it was believed he attempted to breach security in the baggage area. As a safety precaution, a bomb squad was said to be in the area. At least one report has described the man as being naked during the time of the attack.
What happened?
Hadas Brown, a reporter for WESH 2 News, released a Facebook Live video where she covered the story and had identified the man as being naked at the time the bomb threat was made:
“#BREAKING: Naked man claims to have bomb, causes scare at #DaytonaBeach Int’l Airport acc to VCSO. WESH 2 News”
The Wesh 2 News news article expanded on the story, saying that the man entered the airport using some type of bag as clothing; he later emerged naked after leaving an airport bathroom without the bag.
What are officials saying?
According to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, the unidentified man behind the threat was said to be in police custody; it was also noted that he was stunned with a Taser during the incident as he attempted to crawl into the baggage conveyor belt’s opening space. According to Wesh 2 News, officials have not released reports of any injuries relating to the incident.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office also said they would hold a news conference over the story at some time between 9:30 and 9:45 A.M. EST to give further details.
UPDATE: According to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, Sheriff’s spokesman Andrew Gant issued the following statement:
“The airport has been cleared — no bomb, no explosive devices.”
Sheriff’s Mike Chitwood identified the man who was arrested as John T. Greenwood, who was 25 years old at the time of the arrest. It was said that he was taken into custody at least twice before, under the state’s Baker Act for mental evaluations.
Reportedly, at least two flights, one to Charlotte, North Carolina and another to Atlanta, Georgia, were delayed as a result of the incident.
