Crawford, whose real name is Joseph, was born and raised in Alabama. Known as an athlete in high school, when he attended Hewitt-Trussville High School. In 1996, however, he drove to Los Angeles in order to seek work as an actor, getting his start in local theater, also working in construction to support himself. In 1997, he appeared in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. By 2000, he took on the stage name “Clayne,” a portmanteau of “Clay,” after his hometown, and “Clan,” in homage of an ancestor.
Throughout the 2000’s, Crawford made appearances on shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Roswell, CSI: Miami, Thief and Jericho, the latter of which he appeared as a recurring character.
