Oliver North was born on October 7, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas. North served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corp before retiring and becoming a political commentator for FOX News, and a New York Times best-selling author. While North was a decorated serviceman who earned numerous medals like the Purple Heart, Presidential Service Badge, and Silver Star, he is most well-known for his part in the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan administration.

The Iran-Contra scandal included the sale of weapons to Iran, with the profits going to Contras in Nicaragua.

North was initially convicted of three felony accounts — accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and ordering the destruction of documents through his secretary — for his role in the matter. However, his convictions were ultimately vacated thanks to the help of the ACLU.

Now, despite his checkered past and involvement in the controversial sale of weapons, North is set to head the NRA.
