Boxing takes center stage on Saturday, May 5 with Gennady Golovkin returning to the ring to take on Vanes Martirosyan at the Stubhub Center in Carson, Calif. The bout will be for Golovkin’s WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles. Initially, Triple G was slated to face off against Canelo Alvarez in a rematch of their Sept. 16 draw, but Canelo was forced to withdraw from the bout following two positive drug tests for clenbuterol. Canelo claimed that the failed drug tests were a result of contaminated meat.
With Canelo withdrawing from the bout, Vanes Martirosyan stepped in to fill the void.
While Golovkin is favored, Martirosyan is not lacking in confidence.
”This is my destiny fight,” Martirosyan said at the final pre-fight press conference. ”This is everything I have dreamed of. Triple G and I will put on a good fight. I can’t wait for Saturday. Don King, thanks for believing in me. We’ve done all the talking. Now we will do the fight,” Martirosyan said.
Also appearing on the Cinco de Mayo card is a women’s welterweight title fight between Cecilia Braekhus and Kali Reis, UFC veteran Nam Phan, and the return of “Chocolatito” Román González.
