Díaz-Canel was born in the city of Placetas in Villa Clara, the son of a mechanical plant worker. He went on to graduate from Central University of Las Villas as an electronics engineer. Upon graduation, he joined the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.
1985-1993
In the spring of 1985, Díaz-Canel taught at his former university. Within two years, he branched off into politics, completing an international mission in Nicaragua as First Secretary of the Young Communist League of Villa Clara. In 1993, he started working with the Communist Party of Cuba and was elected to the position of First Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee of Villa Clara Province within a year.
1994-2009
By 2003, he was appointed first secretary of the PCC in Holguin and elected member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba. By 2009, he was appointed by the president as Minister of Higher Education.
2010-Present
In 2013, Díaz-Canel became First Vice President of Cuba, which essentially placed him as deputy to the president, Raúl Castro. In 2018, Casto stepped down; by April, Díaz-Canel was selected to succed Castro as president, as confirmed by a vote of the National Assembly.
