Syracuse University has suspended the school’s Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity chapter, often referred to as “Sammy,” after a months-long investigation into hazing allegations.

Syracuse’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs publicly posted the fraternity’s suspension on its website last week. Sigma Alpha Mu is the third SU fraternity suspended for Code of Student Conduct violations during the 2017-18 academic year.

According to The Daily Orange,  the alleged hazing incident occurred at the fraternity during December 2017 and was reported to SU’s Department of Public Safety two days later. At this time, the details of the chapter’s violations and the length of the suspension are unknown.

“Syracuse University has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing and is committed to fostering a safe and healthy community. We take violations of our Code of Student Conduct seriously and any behavior contrary to our values and community standards is met with swift action, ” a Syracuse University spokesperson said in a statement on Friday, April 13.

According to FASA, Sigma Alpha Mu is now one of nine Greek organizations currently banned from operating at SU,

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who were shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.
