Barbara Bush, the 41st First Lady of the United States has passed away at the age of 92.

A statement from the office of former President George H.W. Bush said: “A former first lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the age of 92.” Furthermore, the statement said that First Lady Bush was “surrounded by a family she adores” at the time of her passing.

Former First Lady Bush died shortly after deciding not to undergo further medical treatments for her failing health. She was hospitalized numerous over the last couple of years while battling congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and decided on Sunday, April 15, that she wanted to be surrounded by family.

Biography & Career Accomplishments

Barbara Bush was the wife of George H.W Bush, serving as the First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. Her son is George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States. Barbara was also the mother of Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida who ran for the presidency in 2016, losing to Donald Trump in the primaries.

In addition to Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams and the mother of John Quincy Adams, Mrs. Bush was one of only two first ladies in the history of the country who is also the mother of a president.

George H.W. and Barbara Bush celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in January, making them the longest-married couple in United States Presidential history. The couple got married in Rye, New York in 1945, eventually having six children together.

During her time as First Lady of the United States of America, Mrs. Bush worked to advance the cause of universal literacy and founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which is a charitable organization that encourages parents to read to their children.
