Issa Rae is an producer, actress, writer, and director who is known for creating and staring in the hit HBO comedy series Insecure. Prior to HBO, Rae first received attention for her work on the YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl. For her performance on Insecure, Rae has received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series in 2017 and 2018.
Rae, who born in Los Angeles, California. is half Senegalese and half American: her father, a doctor, was is from Senegal and her mother is a teacher from Louisiana. Her parents met in France while attending school.
Rae grew up in Potomac, Maryland, before moving to Los Angeles when she was in sixth grade. In Los Angeles, Rae she attended a mostly black middle school. In 2007, Rae graduated from Stanford University
Insecure, which premiered in 2016, was renewed by HBO for a third season on August 8, 2017. A release date has not yet been announced. In 2018, Rae appeared in the music video for Drake’s new single “Nice For What” and will appear in the upcoming comedy-drama film The Hate U Give.
