The Early Years

Griffin was born in Okinawa, Japan, where his parents were both stationed as U.S. Army sergeants; after returning to the United States, the family lived in Washington and Louisiana before ultimately settling in Copperas Cove, Texas, as his parents ultimately retired from the army. He went on to attend Copperas cove High School, where he played Basketball, football and track, ultimately graduating a semester early, even serving as class president. He went on to attend Baylor University, as a member of the school’s field and track teams, he ultimately played for the school’s football team, the Bears. Winning various awards during his collegial career, he was the Baylor Offensive MVP in 2008 and won the Heisman Trophy in 2011, among other awards. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2010, he announced his plans to enter the 2012 NFL Draft within two years.


2012-2016

Before being drafted, Griffin signed on for endorsement deals with Adidas, Castrol Motor Oil, EA Sports and Gatorade. Eventually drawing the attention of NFL scouts, Griffin was selected by the Washington Redskins by the 2012 season. The second overall pick, he was actually the second Baylor Bear to be drafted that high in four years and the first Baylor Bear quarterback to be chosen second overall since 1950, when Adrian Burk was chosen. Proving to have a successful rookie season, he won the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He was also named to enter the 2013 Pro Bowl, but negated from the roster over knee injuries. By 2016, however, he was ultimately released from the team.


2016-Present

Following his release from the Redskins, Griffin signed with the Cleveland Browns, with a two-year, $15 million contract. Playing in five games during his first year, however, he was released from the team the following year. In 2018, the Baltimore Ravens announced that Griffin signed a one-year contract with them; according to NFL, general manager Ozzie Newsome issued the following statement:

“He came in last week, worked out. Had a real good workout and we were able to come to an agreement late yesterday. He will probably be here early next week to sign the deal.”

Ravens coach John Harbaugh added:

“He’s a very talented quarterback who’s had a lot of success in this league early on.”

“So we’re excited about it. We felt like we needed a No. 2 quarterback. You look at the veteran quarterbacks out there … I mean, where we’re at right now, I’m pretty excited about this player. I’m really feeling like we got a steal.”
