Here Are The 14 College Basketball Coaches Who Have Won Multiple NCAA Tournament Championships

The 2018 NCAA tournament will come to an end when Villanova and Michigan take the court in San Antonio, Texas on April 2nd. John Beilein will be looking to add his first National Championship to his already stellar coaching resume. Michigan as a school has not won a college basketball championship since 1989. On the other side, Villanova’s coach, Jay Wright, could join a short list of 14 coaches to have won multiple national championships. The Villanova Wildcats will be seeking their second title in three years and third overall.

Many coaches have won the title, but only a select few have managed to win the NCAA Basketball championship more than once. Here is the complete list of college basketball coaches to have won multiple national championships.


John Wooden – 10 titles

John Wooden coached the UCLA Bruins from 1948-1975. During his time with the Bruins, he won 10 national championships, including seven in a row from 1967-1973. Wooden’s overall coaching record was 664-162.


Mike Krzyzewski – 5 Titles

Mike Krzyzewski is currently the head of the Duke Blue Devils basketball program. At Duke, Krzyzewski has won all five of his national championships. Krzyzewski’s overall coaching record is 1,100–338.


Adolph Rupp – 4 Titles

Adolph Rupp coached the Kentucky Wildcats from 1930-1972. While at Kentucky, Rupp won four national championships and the Wildcats were the only program Rupp ever coached at the collegiate level. Rupp’s overall record is 876–190.

Roy Williams – 3 Titles

Roy Williams is the current head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Williams has won three national championships during his coaching career, all with North Carolina. His overall coaching record is 842–227.


Jim Calhoun – 3 Titles

Jim Calhoun is the former head coach for the UCONN Huskies. While with the Huskies Calhoun won three national championships, in 1999, 2004 and 2011. Calhoun’s overall coaching record is 873–380.


Bob Knight – 3 Titles

Bob Knight is the former head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. The controversial, outspoken head coach won three national championships while at the helm of the Hoosiers basketball program. Knight’s overall coaching record is 902–371.

Denny Crum – 2 Titles

Denny Crum coached the Louisville Cardinals basketball team from 1971-2001. During his 30 years at Louisville Crum won two national championships. Crum’s overall coaching record is 675–295.


Billy Donovan – 2 Titles

Billy Donovan is currently the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. Previously, Donovan was the head basketball coach at the University of Florida. While there, Donovan led the Gators to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. Donovan’s overall college coaching record is 675–295.


Henry Iba – 2 Titles

Henry Iba is the former head basketball coach at Oklahoma State. During his time in Stillwater, Oklahoma Iba won back-to-back national championships in 1945 and 1946. Iba’s overall coaching record is 755–340.


Ed Jucker – 2 Titles

Ed Jucker is the former head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats. He coached at Cincinnati for only five years 1960-1965 in those five years Jucker won back-to-back national championships in 1961 and 1962. Jucker overall college basketball coaching record is 270–122.

Branch McCracken – 2 Titles

Branch McCracken led the Indian Hoosiers basketball program from 1938-1943 and then again from 1946-1965. During his two stints with the Hoosiers McCracken won two national championships. McCracken’s overall coaching record is 450–231.


Dean Smith – 2 Titles

Dean Smith is the former legendary coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. With the Tar Heels Smith won two national championships. Smith’s overall coaching record is 879–254.


Phil Woolpert – 2 Titles

Phil Woolpert is the former head coach at the University of San Fransico. Woolpert won back-to-back national championships in 1955 and 1956. His overall coaching record is 243–168.


*Rick Pitino – 2 Titles

Rick Pitino led the Kentucky Wildcats to a national championship in 1996. He also won the tournament in 2013 while at Louisville, but that title has since been stripped due to NCAA violations that also cost him his job at Louisville. Pitino’s overall college coaching record is 646–392.
