Santorum was born in Winchester, Virginia, growing up between West Virginia and Pennsylvania, going on to attend Pennsylvania State University for his undergraduate studies, where he served as chairman of the university’s College Republicans chapter. By 1981, he also completed a one-year MBA program at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. Five years later, he earned his JD degree with honors from Dickinson School of Law. With his early career, he first became involved with politics while volunteering for Senator John Heinz from Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he worked for the Pittsburgh law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart.


1991-1994

n 1990, at age 32, Santorum was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district, ultimately defeating Democratic incumbent Doug Walgren. Two years later, with the 18th District redrawn, he also won re-election in his post.


1994-2005

From 1995 to 2007, Santorum served in the United States Senate representing Pennsylvania, having been elected in the 1994 Republican takeover. One of his most notable legislative proposals was the National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005.


2006-Present

Santorum originally sought re-election to a third Senate term, ultimately losing to Democratic State Treasurer Bob Casey, Jr. After his Senate career, he worked as a lawyer, political consultant and commentator. Santorum notably ran as a candidate in the 2012 presidential campaign, ultimately finishing to Mitt Romney. He also contemplating running in the 2016 presidential run.
