Vivek Ranadivé is an Indian-American businessman, engineer, author, speaker, and philanthropist. Ranadivé is the founder and former CEO of TIBCO, a multimillion-dollar real-time computing company, and of Teknekron Software Systems. For those who have no clue what real-time computing means (like me), via wiki, it’s basically a system that has to respond within a certain time constraint. Like anti-lock breaks that have to maximize deceleration but intermittently stop breaking. Those intermittent stops would utilize the “time constraints” set by real-time computing… The more you know.

Ranadivé is a co-owner and chairman of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. He’s recently been in the news for his uplifting speech following a Kings’ game that was being protested. The protests were in response to a tragic event this past Sunday, where 22-year-old Stephon Clark was shot and killed by Sacramento Police despite being unarmed. Ranadivé acknowledged the Kings’ support of the peaceful protests and promised to work towards uniting the community and preventing this type of tragedy from happening again.

Vivek Ranadivé Net Worth As Of 2018: $700 Million

Ranadivé has been co-owner of the Kings since 2013. Let’s take a look back at his career to see where it all began.

Ranadivé was born on October 7, 1957 in Bombay, India, the most populous city in the country. He was raised in the city and was the youngest of three children. At 16, Ranadivé was accepted to MIT, but in the 1970s the Indian government did not release foreign currency for citizens to study abroad. Ranadivé talked his way into the office of the Reserve Bank of India and got the required foreign exchange for one-quarter of the tuition.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MIT, he received an MBA from Harvard University in 1983. While at MIT, Ranadivé started his first company, a UNIX consulting company. He also held management and engineering positions with Ford Motor Company, MACOM, Linkabit, and Fortune Systems. In 1985, he received $250,000 in seed capital from Teknekron Corp. to found Teknekron Software Systems.

1986-2010

In 1997, Ranadivé founded TIBCO Software Inc., the real-time computing company we learned a bit about at the top. In 1999, Ranadivé published his first book, The Power of Now. The book detailed emerging trends that were expected to affect all businesses as they progress through the 21st century. He went on to publish two more books around predicting business trends: The Power to Predict and The Two-Second Advantage: How We Succeed by Anticipating the Future–Just Enough.

2010-Present

In 2010, Ranadivé dipped his toes in sports ownership. He became the co-owner and vice chairman of the Golden State Warriors, making him the first person of Indian descent to own an NBA franchise. In 2013, it was announced that Ranadivé had joined a couple others to attempt to purchase the Sacramento Kings. In order for Ranadivé to purchase the Kings, he had to sell his share of the Golden State Warriors. On May 16, 2013, it was announced that the group reached an agreement with the Maloof family to purchase 65% of the Kings for approximately $348 million.
