North Carolina Tar Heels Cheerleaders
The North Carolina cheerleading teams are split into Junior Varsity and Varsity squads, first being introduced in 1914 by Frank Porter Graham.
“I was trying out for the baseball team, but I didn’t make the regular squad,” Graham said after organizing the cheerleading program, according to The Daily Tar Heel. “As a substitute I got in the habit of leading the cheering when I wasn’t needed. The next thing I knew I was a cheerleader.”
Both squads cheer at home football games, while the Varsity squad makes the trip to away games. JV then holds court during women’s basketball games, while Varsity suits up for the men’s basketball games.
