The Early Years
Born and bred in New Jersey, Kudlow studied at private school, going on to study at the University of Rochester in New York, earning a degree in history by 1969, also serving as a member of the left-wing Students for a Democratic Society at the school. In 1971, Kudlow attended Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, studying economics and politics, although he left before earning his master’s degree. Around this time, he was also part of Joseph Duffey’s “New Politics” senatorial campaign in Connecticut; he later found work as a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
1981-1994
Kudlow was associate director for economics and planning in the Office of Management and Budget, a part of the Executive Office of the President, during the Reagan administration; at this time, he was also an advisory committee member of Freddie Mac. From 1987 to 1994, he worked for Bear Stearns as its chief economist and senior managing director. He was a member of the board of directors of Empower America, starting during this time.
1995-2008
By the end of the 90’s, Kudlow entered the journalistic field. In 1997, his first book, American Abundance: The New Economic and Moral Prosperity, was published by HarperCollins towards the end of the year. By 2001, he rose to become the Economics Editor at National Review Online. Branching out into television, he served as one of the hosts of the CNBC show America Now, towards the end of the year. By 2002, the show was partially renamed in his honor, becoming Kudlow & Cramer, with fellow host, Jim Cramer. At the start of 2005, he left to become the host of his own show, Mad Money, which was similarly renamed Kudlow & Company, later becoming The Kudlow Report. Over the years, other publications he worked for included the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times and the Cato Journal of the Cato Institute.
2009-Present
In early 2009, it was rumored that Kudlow had aspirations for a run for U.S. Senator from Connecticut in 2010 but later announced that he was not running. He also toyed with the idea of another senatorial campaign the following year. By 2016, he once again his political career became the subject of speculation, as he was rumored for the position of then-President-elect Donald Trump’s chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. On March 12, 2018, Kudlow was chosen by President Donald Trump to become his administration’s senior economic adviser.
