Bruno Mars is one of the biggest pop stars in the world today, with seven No.1 hits, two No. 1 albums, two Super Bowl halftime performances, and now a Grammy for Album of the Year. Oh yeah, he’s also only 32 years old. So how exactly did he go from being a pint-sized Elvis Presley impersonator to arguably the biggest pop star on the planet? And just how much dough has he raked up in that time?

Bruno Mars Net Worth As Of 2018: $90 Million

So how did Bruno Mars earn this much? Let’s take a look below:

Early Life: 1985 – 2002

Bruno Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez on October 8, 1985, to parents Peter and Bernadette. Born and raised in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu, Mars was given the nickname of “Bruno” by his father at the age of two, in reference to the famous professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino. Mars, along with his five brothers and sisters, grew up listening to an eclectic range of music, from reggae to rock and RnB, no doubt inspired by his mother’s work as a singer and dancer and his father’s time spent playing Little Richard songs in his own band.

Mars first began performing on stage at the age of three, joining his uncle who worked as an Elvis Presley impersonator. Mars would work impersonating Presley throughout his childhood, an experience he cites as helping form his sense of throwback showmanship. As he got older, Mars began to teach himself instruments, learning the guitar after being inspired by Jimi Hendrix. At age 17, Mars moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, adopting his full stage name as a response to music industry execs who attempted to pigeonhole him as merely a Latin artist, going so far as to ask him to sing only in Spanish.

Career Beginnings: 2003 – 2009

Mars struck his first deal shortly after moving to Los Angeles, signing with Motown Records in 2004. Mars also spoke with will.i.am’s management during this same period, but neither the record deal nor his conversations with industry needle-movers helped his career take off. Mars was dropped from Motown less than a year after signing with them, and, after a period of stagnation, signed a music publishing deal with Jeff Lindsey at Westside Independent. It was here that Mars would begin learning what it takes to write a pop hit, playing around LA in cover bands with his brother and even selling a song for $20,000 to be performed by Latino boy band Menudo. All of this led to Mars first breakthrough work as a songwriter and producer in 2009, with his contributions via his production team The Smeezingtons being featured on two hit singles: B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You,” and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.”

Success and Superstardom: 2010 – Present

Mars released his debut full-length album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans in 2010. The album was an immediate success, propelled by number one single “Just The Way You Are,” as well as lesser hit singles “Grenade,” and “The Lazy Song.” For those records, Mars was nominated for six Grammy’s in 2011, winning one for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and was nominated for another six Grammy’s in 2012, losing in all six categories.

In 2012, he released his second album, Unorthodox Jukebox, an album largely produced by himself and his co-producers in The Smeezingtons. It was his first record to reach number one on the Billboard 100, while lead single “Locked Out of Heaven,” became his biggest hit to that point and helped earn Mars a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.

2014 saw Bruno Mars headline the Super Bowl halftime show for the first time, setting what was at the time a record for halftime show viewership with 115.3 million viewers. Later that year, Mars would feature on a track with producer and songwriter Mark Ronson. The product of the collaboration, “Uptown Funk,” was an immediate hit, going number one in the US and winning the Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and for Record of the Year. He would go on to be ranked number one on Forbes‘ 30 Under 30, having earned over $60 million before the age of 30.

If that number isn’t crazy enough to think about, try doing the math on what he’s earned since if his current net worth is around $90 million, then somewhere around $30 million of that was earned in the past two years alone. This should go as no surprise, as Mars’ third album, 24K Magic, became his second in a row to reach number one in sales. Buoyed by lead singles “24K Magic” and “That’s What I Like,” 24K Magic would go on to sweep all six of its nominations at the 2018 Grammys, winning Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “24K Magic,” Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance for “That’s What I Like, as well as a Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

Mars kicked off the 24K Magic World Tour in March 2017, having grossed over $200 million in ticket sales so far.
