With conference tournament play underway in NCAA basketball, there is a game between two in-state rivals from the Big 12. These teams are the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats. So far this season, Kansas has won both meetings but do not expect Kansas State to lay it all on the line during Friday’s contest. Although both teams will most likely be in the NCAA Tournament this season, both teams need to win this game to improve their seeds for the tournament. Expect this game to be extremely competitive as a result.
Kansas’s success is due to its extremely talented backcourt. Guards Devonte’ Graham and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk have been the leaders of this year’s team and also have boasted impressive stats thus far in the regular season. Graham is currently averaging 17.3 points per game along with 4.0 rebounds and 7.3 assists. Mykhailiuk is averaging 15.2 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds per game. Both of them know what it takes to win these conference tournament games. Expect Graham and Mykhailiuk to play well on Friday night.
Kansas State’s success is due to its balanced offense. This season, Kansas State has three separate players who are averaging over 11 points per game. Two of these players are forwards while the other one is a guard. This balance allows the Wildcats to defeat teams in a variety of ways. They can either use their physicality to wear you down or their elite shooting from the outside. Expect Kansas State to use their balanced attack on Friday to keep the Jayhawks’ defense off-guard.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Kansas. There is a reason why Kansas is currently ranked in the top ten while Kansas State is not. Kansas has tremendous depth at the guard positions and I expect players like Vick and Newman to take the pressure off of Graham and Mykhailiuk. I Expect Kansas’ fast paced offensive scheme to overwhelm the Wildcats as it leads the Jayhawks to the conference tournament finals.
