The Early Years

In 1987, Pitaro enrolled at Cornell University, earning a B.S. in Economics; after graduating, he went on to Saint John’s University School of Law, earning his J.D. In 1996, his first major job after finishing his education was working as a legal associate for Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker, a position he stayed in for over three years.


2000-2009

In 2000, Pitaro became the VP of Business Affairs for Launch Media, Inc. The following year, he started working for Yahoo; initially serving as a senior director and vice president of business affairs, in less than six years, he became the GM of Yahoo! Sports. The following year, he became the head of sports and entertainment. At the start of 2009, he rose to become VP of Media.


2010-2016

By 2010, Pitaro made a switch from Yahoo to Disney. Initially hired as the co-president for Disney Interactive, he became president for Disney Interactive by 2013. By 2015, he went on to become a co-chair for Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media and President for Disney Interactive. In February 2016, Pitaro was named chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media (DCPI), working with four iconic brands, Disney: Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel.


2017-Present

In early 2018, James Pitaro was announced as the new president of ESPN and the co-chair of Disney Media Networks. According to ESPN, Pitaro gave the following statement in light of the news:

“As a passionate and lifelong sports fan, I am honored to be joining the ESPN team during such a pivotal time in its storied history…The appetite for quality sports content across platforms has never been greater, and I am looking forward to working with the talented ESPN team as we continue to redefine the future fan experience.”
