The captain of Italy’s Fiorentina football team, Davide Astori, was found dead in his hotel room. His official date of death is believed to be March 4, 2018, and he was 31 at the time of his passing.
He was found in the early hours of Sunday morning, while he was staying in Udine, where his team was staying ahead of an Italian league match. Believed to have died in his sleep, he was discovered by teammates when he failed to show up for breakfast.
Fiorentina’s match against Udinese, and the following planned Genoa vs. Cagliari match, have been postponed out of respect for Astori.
Astori is believed to be survived by his wife and their two-year-old daughter.
According to the BBC, Fiorentina released the following statement asking people to be respectful of Astori’s loved ones.
“Given this terrible and delicate situation we appeal to everyone’s sensitivity at this time, above all out of respect for his family.”
Fox Sports also gave a brief explanation of Astori’s career, starting his career within a youth academy in Milan:
“Astori started out in the Milan youth academy but never played a senior match for the Rossoneri, making his Serie A debut with Cagliari in 2008.”
“He spent six years at the Sardinian club before loan spells at Roma and Fiorentina, where he was signed on a permanent basis in 2016.”
What was Davide Astori’s official cause of death?
At this time, an autopsy will be performed at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital. According to USA Today, the team has released the following message:
“Fiorentina is profoundly shaken that it finds itself forced to announce that its captain Davide Astori has died, hit by a sudden illness.”
Fox Sports, among other media organizations, including those from Italy, also attributed Astori’s passing to a heart attack.
