Lawrence was born in Indian Hills, Kentucky. She had her first acting role at the age of nine in which she performed in a church play based on the Book of Jonah, gaining more experience with other church plays and school musicals. At the age of 14, she was discovered by a talent scout while on vacation in New York City; eventually,  she signed on with CESD Talent Agency, giving her the opportunity to audition for roles in Los Angeles. Eventually leaving school at the age of 14, she then placed priority on her acting career.

Lawrence’s breakthrough role was the 2010 independent drama, Winter Bone, based on the Daniel Woodrell novel of the same name. The following year, she appeared in the superhero film X-Men: First Class, playing a younger version of Mystique, a role originally played by Rebecca Romijn. The role that would make her a household name, however, arguably came next year when she was cast as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, a role she reprised in three later films. During this period, she also appeared in films like The Beaver, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Serena.


2015-Present

After finishing the Hunger Games films in 2015, one of her next film projects was playing a fictionalized version of Joy Mangano, inventor of the Miracle Mop, in Joy. The following year, she served as a narrator for the documentary, A Beautiful Planet and reprised her Mystique role in X-Men: Apocalypse and appeared in the sci-fi film, Passengers. The following year, she appeared in the horror film, Mother! In 2018, she appeared in the spy thriller, Red Sparrow, playing a Russian spy who becomes a double agent after falling in love. The same year, Lawrence was set to reprise Mystique in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
