University Of Tennessee Student Dies During Charity Boxing Match

Joseph Tanner Wray, a 20-year-old University of Tennessee student, died on Friday, February 23, after collapsing during a charity boxing event held by a university fraternity. Wray collapsed between rounds before being taken to a hospital.

Wray collapsed after the second round of a boxing match during the Ace Miller Boxing Tournament. The tournament, which is organized by University of Tennessee fraternities without the university, was canceled after Wray collapsed. First responders attempted to assist Wray before taking him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The tournament is named in memory of Ace Miller, who ran the Golden Gloves Gym in Knoxville and founded the tournament. Miller passed away in 2012.

On Friday, February 23, 2018, at approximately 9:26 p.m., between the second and third rounds of a boxing match, a male participating in the match collapsed as he was about to sit down on his stool inside the ring. The male was a participant in the Ace Miller Boxing Tournament, which is an annual tournament where University of Tennessee fraternities box against each other.

Medical assistance was provided to the male by on-scene medical personnel. The male was transported to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body was transported to the forensics center where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The investigation is continuing.

Wray was the Vice President of Chi Phi at UTenn and formerly was the Historian of the Phi Delta Chapter. Wray, a junior Aerospace Engineering major, was Initiated in the spring of 2017.

An investigation into Wray’s death is ongoing.
