Actress Emma Chambers, best known for her work in The Vicar of Dibley, has passed away at the age of 53, as confirmed by her agency.

What happened?

Stating that she would be “greatly missed,” the agency released the following statement, according to the BBC:

“Emma created a wealth of characters and an immense body of work. She brought laughter and joy to many.”

Chambers was best known role of Alice Tinker in the BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley and Honey Thacker in the film Notting Hill. She was also known for playing Charity Pecksniff in a television adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel Martin Chuzzlewit; her first filmed acting role was in a BBC adaptation of the 1915 D. H. Lawrence novel, The Rainbow. In 1998, she won the British Comedy Award for best actress for her performance as Alice Tinker.

She also had worked as a voice actress, appearing in an animated television adaptation of The Wind in the Willows in 1995 and the 2003 television series, Little Robots. She was also known for appearing in various stage productions and plays.

Chambers is survived by her husband, fellow actor Ian Dunn, whom she had married in 1991.

Many people, both fans and contemporaries, have offered their condolences to Chambers on social media. As seen below, British broadcaster and cultural commentator, Emma Freud, wrote the following message:

“Our beautiful friend Emma Chambers has died at the age of 53. We’re very very sad. She was a great, great comedy performer, and a truly fine actress. And a tender, sweet, funny, unusual, loving human being.”


What was Emma Chambers’ official cause of death?

According to BBC, the agency confirmed that Chambers had died of “natural causes.” As mentioned above, she was 53 years old at the time of her passing and is believed to be survived by her husband. Her official date of death was Wednesday, February 21, 2018, although news of her death was not made public until the following Saturday.
