The Early Years

Alley was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, going attending Wichita Southeast High School and Kansas State University. She initially pursued work as an interior designer in Los Angeles, also appearing appeared as a contestant on popular game shows like Match Game and Password Plus in the late 70’s and early 80’s.


1982-1986

Eventually, she decided to pursue a career as an actress, making her film debut in 1982 in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, playing the Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik. Throughout the decade, she appeared in films like One More Chance, Blind Date and Runaway, also appearing in the miniseries, North and South.


1987-1990

In 1987, she appeared in the film Summer School and joined the cast of the NBC sitcom, Cheers, replacing actress Shelley Long, remaining on the show until the final season. In 1989, she appeared in the film, Look Who’s Talking, with John Travolta, also appearing in two follow-up films.


1991-1999

By 1991, Alley earned her first Emmy for her work on Cheers, after two previous nominations. By 1994, she earned her second Emmy for her work in the 1994 television film, David’s Mother. By 1995, she also received a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. From 1997 to 2000, she also appeared in the sitcom, Veronica’s Closet.


2000-2008

In 2000, she became a spokesperson for Pier One, a home furnishing retailer, until 2004. After finishing that gig, she became a spokesperson for Jenny Craig from 2005 to 2008.


2009-Present

In 2011, she was announced as a contestant on the 12th season of Dancing with the Stars, partnering with Maksim Chmerkovskiy; they both later appeared on the show’s 15th season. In late 2013, she appeared in her own TV Land sitcom, Kirstie, lasting for one season. Afterwards, she also appeared in shows like The Middle and Scream Queens.
