With a bit of international background, McHale was born in Rome, Italy, to an American father and a Canadian mother, and is of Irish and Norwegian ancestry. He grew up in Seattle, Washington, and spent a few years in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Returning to Washington state, he attended Mercer Island High School. He later went on to attend the University of Washington, where he belonged to Theta Chi fraternity and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History and a Master of Fine Arts from the school’s Professional Actors Training Program.

McHale’s first foray into comedy was a local-access show in Seattle called Almost Live! Eventually moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, he started with roles in shows like Will & Grace and Bill Nye the Science Guy.

2004-2008

In 2004, he got his big break by becoming the host of The Soup, a revamp of Talk Soup. 2004 also saw McHale’s film debut, appearing in Spider-Man 2. Other films he appeared in during this time included Lords of Dogtown, The Onion Movie and The Informant.

2009-2017

In 2009, McHale starred in his own sitcom, Community, for NBC, while still serving as a host for The Soup. Both shows ended in 2015. The following year, he later starred in the sitcom, The Great Indoors, in which he played an adventure reporter who was hired to manage a team of Millennials. Proving short-lived, the series only lasted a season.
