FC Basel will host Manchester City on their home ground, St. Jakob-Park, this Tuesday night in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. This will be the first meeting between the Swiss and English club in any UEFA competition.
Basel currently sits second in the Swiss Super League. This is the third time they have made the last 16 of the competition, and they’ve qualified for the group stage eight times since 1992. The Premier League leaders Manchester City come into this match with their eyes set on the Champions League trophy and their hopes of winning the quadruple still alive – the league, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League.
Man City has never played a Swiss club in a European competition, whereas this will be Basel’s 29th meeting with an English opponent. Basel has had some success with English clubs too, mainly at home. During the group stage stages of this years competition, they deservedly won 1-0 against Manchester City rivals, Manchester United. Back in 2013 and 2014, they beat Chelsea and Liverpool respectively with the same scoreline but lost 1-4 to Arsenal in 2016.
