The Early Years
Boseman was born and raised in South Carolina, attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., He graduated in 2000 with a bachelor of fine arts in directing. He went on to the British American Drama Academy in Oxford and the Digital Film Academy in New York City. Before starting his career as a professional actor, he served as a drama instructor for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture’s Junior Scholars Program in Harlem, New York.
2003-2008
Despite the popular phrase that everyone, deep down, wants to direct, Boseman decided that he’d rather be in front of the camera. Starting in 2003, he started to appear in shows filming in New York, such as Third Watch and Law & Order. Eventually, Boseman decided to try his luck on the West Coast, moving to Los Angeles in order to pursue an acting career in 2008.
2008-2016
One of his big breakout roles was playing the recurring character, Nathaniel “Nate” Ray, on Lincoln Heights in 2008; during the same year, he had his big film breakout playing real-life former American football halfback Floyd Little in The Express. In 2010, he appeared as Sergeant Graham McNair in the summer miniseries, Persons Unknown. For a time, he developed a niche for himself playing historical figures, such as Jackie Robinson in 2013’s 42 and James Brown in 2014’s Get on Up.
2016-Present
In 2017, Boseman got the part that was cast as T’Challa, the Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War. The following year, he portrayed Thurgood Marshall in the titular biopic, Marshall. In 2018, he was set to reprise his Black Panther character in a film spin-off starring the character, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War.
