This Saturday, there is a game between two above average teams. These teams are the Butler Bulldogs and the Villanova Wildcats. According to the AP poll, Villanova is currently ranked number one in the country while Butler is currently unranked. However, despite the talent disparity between these two teams, these teams are rivals in the Big East conference which usually leads to extremely competitive games. Expect Butler to hang around more than people anticipate.
Butler’s success is due to its star forward Kelan Martin This season, Martin is averaging 20.3 points per game along with 6.5 rebounds. Martin has looked like one of the best players in the country this season and is a contender to win the Naismith College Player of the Year Award. Entering this season, Martin needed to play at this elite level in order to boost his draft stock and his performance this season will most likely get him selected in the upcoming NBA Draft. Expect Martin to have himself a big game if Butler plans on pulling off this upset.
Villanova is currently the best team in the country according to the AP poll. The team’s success is due to its elite offense. This season, Villanova is scoring 87.9 points per game which ranks third in all of college basketball. The team’s offensive success is due to its unselfish nature. The Wildcats currently have six players who are averaging double digit points per game. That is absolutely ridiculous. Villanova can use its depth and balanced offense to wear out its opponents which is what it will attempt to do on Saturday. Expect a lot of players to contribute on the offensive end against Butler as a result.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Villanova. Villanova is clearly the deeper and more talented team and I expect Villanova to force the ball out of Martin’s hands frequently in order to force someone else to beat them. I think Villanova’s offense will have another big game as it carries the Wildcats to another victory.
