Like a lot of professional coaches, Pederson got his start on the other side of the field. Over the years, he’s played for teams including the Miami Dolphins, the Cleveland Browns, the Green Bay Packers, for which he had two stints, and even the Philadelphia Eagles, for whom he would gain later notoriety as a coach. Staying with the Packers the longest, he ended his final season with the team enduring a hit to his side that resulted in a cracked bone in his back, a torn muscle in his side, and a broken rib. He retired as a professional player in March 2005, starting off his professional coaching career.

Pederson got his start in coaching through the high school circuit, getting a job as a head football coach of Calvary Baptist Academy, a private Christian high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, the state he went to college. He stayed with the school for four years before he went on to assistant coaching teams on the NFL circuit.
