Quarterback Alex Smith just got traded by the Kansas City Chiefs in a deal with the Washington Redskins. The move also means Kirk Cousins will be leaving Washington. The deal is reported to be a four year, $94 million extensions for Alex Smith who will be signed through 2022. With this blockbuster move, how much is the football quarterback worth?

Alex Smith Net Worth: $60 Million

The Early Years: 1990’s-2000’s

Smith was born in Bremerton Washington but was raised in La Mesa, California where he attended Helix Charter High school. While in high school, Smith was a starter for the Helix Scotties and led his team to a record of 25-1, taking them to the San Diego CIF section championships twice. He also was awarded the Offensive Player of the Year award twice, and team MVP. But Smith wasn’t only excelling on the field. He was also the president of his senior class and performed well in his academic courses. But from an early age, football was his passion.

The College Years: Early 2000-2005

Smith went to the University of Utah where he played number 11 for the Utah Utes. In 2004, he was selected as the 2004 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. Playing as a starter, he led his team to big wins in the 2003 Liberty Bowl and the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. It only took Smith two years to earn his Bachelor’s in economics because of the college courses he was taking for credit in high school and even began working towards his masters before he was drafted.

2005-2012: San Francisco 49ners

In 2005, Smith was the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, selected by coach Mike Nolan on behalf of the San Fransisco 49ners. Later that year he was signed to a six-year contract of $50 million with $25 million guaranteed. Stifled by an injury at the start of his first season, Smith played in 9 games and garnered one touchdown his rookie season. Over his six years with the team, Smith went through seven offensive coordinators and three head coaches. In recent years, Smith has opened up about his time with the 49ners, calling the culture of the work environment unhealthy and the organization “completely dysfunctional.” Luckily for the young quarterback, he soon found more success on his next team.

2012-Present: Kansas City Chiefs to Washington Redskins

In February of 2013, The 49ners agreed to trade Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for their second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Smith has posted a 50-26 record as a starter for the Chiefs and has been named to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. Just this season, he set career heights in passing yards (4,042), touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7). Unfortunately for Smith, the Chiefs came off of a high when they were knocked out of the playoffs in the wild-card round at Arrowhead Stadium, losing to the Tennessee Titans 22-21. The Washington Redskins will be the player’s third franchise.

So how much is this valued player worth? Smith’s net worth is currently estimated to be about $60 million.
