The Doomsday Clock has been swirling around the internet like a shark circling its prey in the water. Most people don’t know what the Clock is or what it represents but with a name like ‘Doomsday Clock’ its hard not to think its a bad thing. They’re not entirely wrong, but everyone should be able to formulate their own opinion on the significance of it.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

For those of you like me that were unfamiliar with what the Doomsday Clock is let me explain. The Doomsday Clock was created by a group of atomic scientists around the time the US was on the verge of a nuclear war and an arms race with the Soviet Union. This team of scientists is an independent and non-profit body “with a goal of influencing public policy to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.” Co-founder Eugene Rabinowitch said: “The Bulletin’s clock is not a gauge to register the ups and downs of the international power struggle; it is intended to reflect basic changes in the level of continuous danger in which mankind lives in the nuclear age.” The same scientists that were part of the Manhattan Project, you know the one that created the nukes that the US used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan are the ones that created the clock. Initially set at seven minutes to midnight, the hands have been back and forth 22 times during its lifetime. The biggest threat was judged to be in 1953 when the US created the hydrogen bomb – at that point, the clock was set at two minutes to midnight.

Current Status of The Doomsday Clock

The Doomsday clock has moved to two and a half minutes from midnight, the second closest its been to the 12 o’clock hour since its creation in 1947. The committee has said that movement of the clock is completely dedicated to the increasing chances of nuclear weapons being used with unstable leaders such as Kim Jung Un being in possession of nuclear weapons.

Why You Shouldn’t Worry

Let’s be honest here for a second, this clock is just an estimate made by a bunch of scientists, and everyone’s relying on this “clock” like its the sun. Maybe it’s because I don’t believe in any of this end of the world mumbo jumbo because no one actually knows anything about a fact. The Doomsday clock, in my opinion, is a bunch of bull used to make people worry about the world ending and blah blah blah. The difference between the Doomsday clock and other world-ending predictions such as “Y2K” and “The Mayans Prediction” is that the Doomsday clock is more of a thermostat than a prediction. It just gauges the likelihood of the end of the world instead of giving us a legit date and time. Regardless, our world is in a place where everyone is on edge because everyone thinks everyone’s going to nuke them and their mother and the world is going to end. While all of you sweat out this newest installment on the Doomsday Clock drama, going to sit here and try and prestige again in Call of Duty.
