The Early Years
Hawkins was born in the Dulwich borough of London and raised Blackheath borough of The City of London. The daughter of children’s book writers, she grew up in a creative environment. Inspired by high school drama classes, she enrolled into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) based in London in 1994 and graduated in 1998. While still a student, she was cast as an extra in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
2002-2008
Starting her career with small roles on television and stage, her first major on-screen performance was the 2002 film, All or Nothing. She also gained recognition in 2007 in a television adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, earning a Golden Nymph. At this time, she also appeared in the Woody Allen film, Cassandra’s Dream. The following year, she appeared in the film Happy-Go-Lucky, earning her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
2010-2014
At the start of the decade, she appeared in three films, Made in Dagenham, Submarine and Never Let Me Go, that premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. In 2013, she appeared in another Woody Allen film, Blue Jasmine, with Cate Blanchett, earning an Academy Award nomination; the same year, she starred in All Is Bright. In 2014, she appeared in Godzilla.
2015-Present
In November 2014, she portrayed matriarch in Paddington, a film adaptation of the well-known children’s bear character, a part she reprised in the 2017 sequel. She also starred in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water; her character in the film, Elisa Esposito, was mute beyond an imagined musical sequence. Hawkins had been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture in the Drama category for the role, with the film being nominated for at least 7 other categories.
