In the second weekend of bowl games, there is a rematch between two above average team. These teams are the Toledo Rockets and the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Both teams faced each other in the Camellia Bowl last season where the Mountaineers won 31-28. This season, the Rockets are seeking revenge and are looking add a bowl game trophy to add to its collection. As for Appalachian State, this team has already beaten Toledo and will attempt to duplicate its performance last year to win another bowl game.
Toledo’s success is due to senior quarterback Logan Woodside. This season, Woodside threw for over 3,700 passing yards and 28 touchdowns along with only five interceptions. Woodside’s success is due to his pinpoint accuracy in the passing game. This season, Woodside completed over 64 percent of his passes and will attempt to pick apart this quality Appalachian State defense. In last year’s bowl game, Woodside played well against the Mountaineers as he threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Expect Woodside to duplicate that impressive performance this Saturday.
Appalachian State’s success is primarily due to quarterback Taylor Lamb. In 12 games this season, Lamb threw for over 2,600 yards and 27 touchdowns along with only six interceptions. Lamb’s statistics are even more impressive once one factors in his contributions to the team’s running game. Lamb also had 539 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns while averaging an impressive 7.7 yards per carry. In last year’s bowl game, Lamb torched Toledo on the ground for 126 yards and one touchdown. Expect Lamb to use his mobility again against the Rockets on Saturday.
As for my prediction, I have to side with Toledo. Although both teams obviously want to win this bowl game, I think that Toledo wants it just a little bit more due to the revenge factor. Toledo finally has the opportunity to avenge its bowl game loss last season and I expect Toledo to do everything it can to win this contest. I think that this game will be extremely competitive throughout, but I think Toledo squeaks out a three point victory.
