Back in November, we brought you the tragic story of the death Andrew Coffey, a 20-year-old Florida State University fraternity pledge who was found dead at a party. According to Tallahassee police, Coffey, a Pi Kappa Phi pledge and civil engineering major, who was found unresponsive at an off-campus house party that happened between Thursday, November 2 and Friday, November 3.
Coffey, from Pompano Beach, was found on the morning of Friday, November 3 at 10:23 AM EST after the Tallahassee Police Department received a call about an unresponsive person at a home on Buena Vista Drive. Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene. Now, about six weeks later, WCTV obtained a copy of the presentment that was written following the Grand Jury held in the aftermath of Coffey’s death.
According to WCTV, the presentment was compiled after two days of testimony from close to 50 people, including four brothers and 38 pledges of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, an organization that Coffey was pledging at the time of his death. The presentment states that the party in which Coffey died at on November 3 was a Big Brother reveal party and that Coffey reportedly drank a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon.

The presentment says Coffey passed out and was described as being “asleep,” on a futon on the porch of the house where the party was taking place. The presentment also states that nobody called for medical attention after Coffey passed out.
The presentment says there was over an 11-minute delay between a fellow pledge attempting to wake up Coffey the following morning and a call for help. Documents say that in that time, text messages and phone calls were made to five fraternity members before 911 was called.
The document also reveals that the members and pledges of Pi Kappa Phi did not fully cooperate with law enforcement as they investigated Coffey’s death. 22 pledges and 16 brothers of Pi Kappa Phi spoke with law enforcement, but 19 pledges and 22 brothers refused to be interviewed. Only two of the nine members on the executive council spoke to law enforcement.
Coffey’s autopsy revealed tht he had blood alcohol level of .447 , with his peak alcohol level had being at .558. The grand jury said that most of the “pledges and members were more concerned with the fraternity being kicked off campus and/or their own legal liability.”
At the time of Coffey’s death, Florida State University Vice President Amy Hecht released this statement:
“We are overwhelmed with sadness any time we learn of the death of one of our students, and the FSU family provides extensive outreach to their family and friends as they mourn the loss of a young life. We do not yet have details surrounding the passing today of student Andrew Coffey, but we will work closely with the Tallahassee Police Department as it investigates to determine the facts surrounding this case.”
Pi Kappa Phi suspended all chapter operations and the members of the chapter have been directed to cooperate fully with all investigative efforts. Similarly, Florida State suspended all Greek life following his death.
