Clemson University Sophomore Dead After Being Found Unresponsive At His Apartment

Bowen Paul Ellis, a 19-year-old Clemson University student, was found dead in his off-campus home on Saturday, December 9.

According to a press release from Clemson University, Ellis, 19, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, was found dead Saturday afternoon after his roommates found him unresponsive at their apartment. The Anderson Independent reports that Clemson police responded to a 911 call around 4:45 PM. They contacted the Pickens County Coroner’s Office shortly after.

Ellis’ cause of death will be determined by an autopsy. He was a forest resource management major at Clemson University.

Chris Miller, Clemson’s dean of students, said that Ellis was “well-liked” by his peers and his death has the left community shocked:

“All we know is that he was found unresponsive by his roommates. It’s just a real loss for our family. … It’s a tragedy,” Miller said.

According to Ellis’ obituary, Bowen enjoyed hanging out with his friends at Edisto Beach and had an immense love for the outdoors. He is survived by his parents Charles Betts Ellis and Traci Warren Ellis, and his two sisters, Grayson Betts Ellis and Carter Reid Ellis.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, December 12, in Mount Pleasant at the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Clemson is offering support and counseling services to students, who are encouraged to contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (864) 656-2451 to speak with a counselor.
