Akayed Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man who was living in Brooklyn, has been identified as the suspect in custody for today’s pipe bomb explosion under the New York City Port Authority.
The NYPD responded to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Ave around 7:20 AM. Ullah had wires attached to him and was armed with a five-inch metal pipe bomb and battery pack.
A pipe bomb exploded below the Port Authority near 42nd street between 8th and 9th ave. Fire officials said the report of an explosion came in around 7:19 AM. Reports indicate the bomb went off prematurely.
Law enforcement officials say thatAkayed Ullah had explosive devices strapped on when it exploded. Ullah WAS wearing a homemade device that either did not detonate properly or malfunctioned. A total of 4 injuries were reported at the scene of an explosion at Port Authority, however, all injuries are non-life-threatening.Akayed Ullah was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Ullah, who has been living in America for seven years, carried out the attack in the name of ISIS. Mayor de Blasio, who was briefed on the incident, says the explosive device used in the attempted “terror attack” was “low-tech”.
At this time, all MTA trains are bypassing the Port Authority and 42 St. stops as police investigated the incident.
This is the second ISIS-style terror attack in New York City in the last couple of months. On October 31, multiple people were killed in an attack when 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipova drove a Home Depot rental truck into a crowd in Lower Manhattan. Saipov was responsible for killing 8 people and wounding several others. Saipov’s attack was the first act of terrorism with fatalities in New York City since September 11, 2001.
Port Authority is the largest bus terminal in the United States, with about 232,000 commuters using the terminal daily. The Port Authority is a transportation hub where buses and trains operate. The main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City, the terminal is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The bus terminal is located in Midtown at 625 Eighth Avenue between 40th Street and 42nd Street, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel and one block west of Times Square. It is one of three bus terminals operated by the PANYNJ, the others being the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Upper Manhattan and the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City.
