Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright was arrested on Friday and booked on domestic violence charges following an incident with his wife in his Tennessee home.
Wright was arrested on Friday, December 8, 2017. He has been charged with assault and preventing a 911 call, according to Williamson Court Records. The pitcher was released on December 9 after posting $5,000 bail. According to records, Wright was booked at 9:25 P.M. and released from jail at 9:15 A.M.
The domestic assault arrest was first reported by Rob Bradford of WEEI and Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston.
“On Friday night, Steven was arrested at our home following a verbal argument, and the police charged him with domestic assault,” said Wright’s attorney, Alex Little, in a statement to NBC Sports Boston. “Although he said things he deeply regrets, he did not raise his hand at anyone during the incident, and the situation was purely emotional. We are working together as a family to make our relationships stronger, and we ask that you respect our privacy as we do so.”
The Red Sox released a team statement saying, “We are aware of the incident involving Steven. This is certainly a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously. It is my understanding that both local police and MLB are looking into this and for that reason, the club won’t have any further comment at this time.”
Wright, 33, and his wife Shannon Wright had just celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary. They live together in Franklin, Tennessee, near the state capital of Nashville. According to social media posts, the couple has two young children; a son and a daughter.
According to sources from the Boston Herald, the Wrights are back together and the conflict had resolved “amicably.” He is due to appear in court on December 21. Along with his future criminal case, the MLB’s department of investigations will work under a joint policy with the MLBPA to investigate the incident, according to NBC Sports Boston.
The police report of Friday night’s domestic incident hasn’t been revealed the media yet.
Wright has been employed with the Boston Red Sox since 2013, working as a knuckleballer. He’s been on the shelf for most of the 2017 season after tearing cartilage in his left knee.

A class A misdemeanor carries a sentence of up to 11 months and 29 days in jail as well as a possible fine up to $2,500. Domestic Assault can either be a class A or class B misdemeanor demanding on the severity of the crime. The punishment for a class B misdemeanor carries a maximum of six months in jail and a fine up to $500.
